Tutor Spotlights

Welcome to the Tutor Spotlights page, where we celebrate the fabulous students that make the NCVirtual Peer Tutoring Center so wonderful. Below is a list of tutors that have contributed greatly to the success of this program.   Without further ado, we introduce our outstanding tutors!

Sheel P.

Sheel P. decided to volunteer for the PTC due to his passion for sharing his interest in math, Spanish, and the natural sciences with others. He currently tutors in Math I, Precalculus, Spanish I-IV Honors, Environmental Sciences, American History, and Biology. In addition to peer tutoring, he helps mentor students as a part of the Virtual Buddy program and writes for the TutorTalk blog. Sheel’s favorite part about being a part of the PTC is the collaborative environment it provides for students to work together to provide the best possible services to the NCVirtual student body. At his face-to-face school, he is part of the National Beta Club, Student Council, Science Olympiad, Environmental Concerns Organization, Investment Club, and Envirothon. Sheel is very dedicated to implementing sustainable practices in his daily life and would like to continue his study of the environmental or health fields in college.

Shruti A.

Shruti decided to volunteer for the Peer Tutoring Center because of her love for teaching kids and her desire to give
back to the community. Her favorite part about tutoring is being able to watch students grow as they understand material better, even over the course of one tutoring session. Within the PTC, she is a virtual buddy and a tutor in Biology, World History, Math I-III, 8th grade Math & ELA.  Outside of school, Shruti is a dancer and plays flute, piano, and violin! After high school, she plans on attending college and getting a masters degree.

Audrey W.

Audrey W. decided to join the PTC after she received an email from her first NCVirtual teacher telling her about the PTC’s services. She is currently a Virtual Buddy and enjoys helping students get back on track with their coursework. In fact, one of the students she was assigned to had 30 missing assignments, but she was able to help the student get caught up within two weeks. Outside of the PTC, Audrey is the student body Treasurer at her school, a member of Key Club, and a volunteer for the Red Cross youth action campaign. She also loves old-fashioned storybooks and keeps a small collection. In the future, Audrey would like to get a teaching degree and work as a kindergarten teacher.

Sylvie S.

When her Latin II teacher recommended that she join the Peer Tutoring Center, Sylvie S. jumped at the opportunity to grow as a student/mentor. It was a way for her to let go a little and take time to enjoy talking about her favorite classes while trying to make a positive impact in her peers’ lives. At the PTC, Sylvie S. participates in many of the programs and is currently TutorTalk Co-Editor, a Team Lead, a Virtual Buddy, and a Marketing Team member. She’s also a peer tutor and tutors in Math I & II Honors, Latin I-III, Biology Honors, World History Honors, English I, and German I, as well as 8th Grade English and Math. Outside of the PTC, she enjoys playing tennis, studying German, and trail running. She participates in several of her school's clubs, including Mock Trial, Ethics Bowl, Junior Classical League, and Latin Club. Joining the PTC was probably one of the best decisions Sylvie S. ever made. Nowhere else, she feels, would she have been able to share her love of learning and overly thorough note-taking with so many amazing people.

Nicky O.

Nicky O. was inspired to become a peer tutor because she understands how difficult school is. She believes that giving or receiving help from your peers is an invaluable resource for students. She tutors in several different subjects including Math, Psychology, Anatomy & Physiology, Chemistry, and German. Outside of the PTC, Nicky loves to read. She’s part of the Student Council, the International Youth Neuroscience Association, HOSA, and Freedom School Academy. She also plays soccer and is a Girl Scout. In the future, she’s planning on getting her undergraduate degree and then going to medical school.

She is currently a tutor for Advanced Functions and Modeling, Math I through III, Psychology Honors, Spanish I, and World History and is also interested in joining the Virtual Buddy and TutorTalk teams. Outside of school, Laressia is a Girl Scout, serves on two youth advisory boards/councils, and participates in her school’s debate club. Laressia has met Ariana Grande at a concert before, and she sees herself graduating from college with honors and preparing for law school in the future.

 Delta C.

Delta
Joining the PTC was a way for Peer Tutor Delta C. to dedicate her free time to helping students who might be struggling in school. In her third semester with the PTC, Delta tutors in Latin I, II, and III. She uses her personal experiences and study techniques to assist other students to be successful in their courses. Being able to help students work through the same issues she struggled with reminded her that she’s not alone. She’s also dedicated to making sure her fellow peers won’t have to face their struggles alone. Outside of the PTC, Delta loves swimming and playing volleyball. In addition to being on a year-round swim team, she participates in and helps coach the swim team at her high school. After graduating, Delta plans to attend NC State’s engineering school or pursue a law degree.

Anuragh S.

Anuragh S. realized early on that he had a passion for teaching and helping teachers in ensuring their students’ success. When he told his Honors Precalculus NCVirtual teacher about his love for teaching, she recommended that he join the Peer Tutoring Center. Anuragh currently tutors in numerous subjects, including math courses ranging from Math I to AP Calculus BC, science courses ranging from honors science classes to AP Biology, and social studies classes, such as Honors Civics and Economics and Honors American History II. Anuragh is also a member of his school’s Science Bowl and Mock Trial teams and has participated in Science Olympiad for five years, earning several awards over the years. He started a neuroscience club at his school for students interested in discussing and reading about neuroscience-related topics and is planning on inviting researchers from Duke University to provide their input in a club meeting. He is also working with the Outreach committee, a branch of his school’s Student Government Association, as a part of the Day in the Life Initiative, which provides a way for students to discuss the multifacetedness of school life, including topics like academics and extracurriculars. Earlier in the year, Anuragh was selected to have lunch with the director of the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Francis Collins, which he found to be an amazing and humbling experience. During their meeting, they talked about topics such as genetic privacy, Dr. Collins’ own research, and future initiatives of the NIH. Five years from now, Anuragh would like to be wrapping up his bachelor’s degree in biology or neurobiology at a prestigious university.
