There are many different methods that students use to study for tests and quizzes. Some of these include flashcards, practice problems, and reading over notes. But how do you know which method to use? You need to examine what you will be tested/quizzed on to find the answer to this question.
Memorization
Whenever you have to memorize vocab or formulas, flashcards are always a go-to. The studying begins when you make your flashcards. Just writing down what you need to know helps you memorize it. Then, once your flashcards are made, you can quiz yourself. If you get stuck on a flashcard, don’t just forget about it. Put it back in the pile and come back to it until you get it right. In addition, don’t go over your flashcards only once. Start using them a couple days before your quiz or test. The morning of, it might be helpful to go over the flashcards one last time in case there are any stubborn cards that just didn’t stick in your memory before.
Another great thing about flashcards is that if you don’t have much time, you can make a Quizlet. Quizlet is an amazing tool to use. Not only does it speed up the flashcard process by allowing you to type rather than write, but it allows you to star cards you have answered incorrectly and test your knowledge in different ways, such as games, quizzes, or typing the answer in a box.
Math Problems
When studying for a math test, it’s always a good idea to work on some practice
problems before hand. Many teachers don’t assign all the problems in the textbook for each unit. You can use the problems they didn’t assign as practice. If your teacher has already assigned all the textbook problems, the internet is at your disposal. Simply google “practice problems” for the unit you’re on and plenty will come up.
So why waste the time doing all these practice problems? Well, more often than not, you’ll run across a problem you’re unfamiliar with or unable to solve. Working through these problems and giving them a solid effort will help you to remember how to do them on test day. Whenever you have to really think about something, it is more likely to stick in your memory. Completing practice problems will help you remember how to solve any types of problems you struggled with while studying.
Concepts
If you have to know a concept or theory for a test, you can do this by getting together a study group. Study groups are great for understanding concepts because they allow you to talk things out and gain a better understanding of the given idea. You and your study buddies can take turns trying to explain the concepts to each other. Once you do this, you’ll be sure to ace the concept on the test!
So What About Reading Notes?
In the past, many of you may have studied by simply reading over your notes. However, this is not always the most effective method of studying. While reading over your notes will help you refresh with some basic ideas and facts, it doesn’t help them stick. If you really want to remember what’s in your notes, try using some of the other methods mentioned above.
Katie, thank you so much for the information you compiled in your article to help students conduct effective study sessions. Really helpful information! I hope the students will take advantage of following your advice. Ms. Seastrunk
ReplyDeleteI like the suggestion to use Quizlet. We typically lean to paper flashcards, but Quizlet is a great way to get technology involved and give your brain a visual boost! Great tip!
ReplyDeleteI agree with using handwritten flashcards, more so than quizlet, because studies have shown that writing something more than once will help improve your ability to remember it. But if you are running short on time, quizlet is a great website to take adventage of! Similarly, there's an app for smartphones called chegg flashcards+ that is basically quizlet on the go!
ReplyDeleteI already use Quizlet, and it is a great study tool. I have never thought to use extra problems as practice problems for tests. I think all of your suggestions are great, and I will try them all, if I haven't done so already!
ReplyDeleteRamya,
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of using flashcards. I have a test coming up this week and I've been reading over my notes. I have decided to try out the flashcards instead to see if that will help. I'm excited about trying it. Thanks for the tips.
I use quizlet to help me study sometimes and it is a very useful study tool. I would recommend everyone use it to help learn their subject.
ReplyDeleteQuizlet is the best way for me to study because you can play games and make flashcards to help you learn, its a great study method if you are ever struggling in a class.

ReplyDeleteI love using flashcards, because I'm a very visual learner and I can picture the information on the card.

ReplyDeleteI love the idea of working through math problems on your own that were not assigned. It allows me to learn a concept I might not have learned before. I also enjoy using Quizlet I am better with memorization and Quizlet helped me with that a lot. I will definitely try the other suggestions for studying too, thanks for the tips.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite way to study would be using flashcards. I always put my vocabulary words on there and I also take the information that I have in my notes and turn them into questions so I can memorize the information I have in my notes as well. If I have a math test I like to google problems to get more practice or redo problems that I missed.
Katie - thank you for writing this article and sharing it with our students. You have provided some great study methods students can use in order to prepare for their tests. You make a great point in regards to varying your study method based on the content being tested. Quizlet, flashcards and repetition are great ways to study. Quizlet offers an interactive way for students to study and also vary the type of study method as well - flash cards, games, fill-in-the blank, spelling, etc. In addition, it also includes audio. Great tips to help students succeed! Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteKatie-
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting your suggestions to students about studying vocabulary, working math problems, and encouraging the use of student study groups. Suggestions coming from a student to other students is helpful to teachers. Thank you for encouraging students to work additional math problems and not just those assigned by the teacher!
You did a great job summarizing some simple study strategies for students.
Katie, Flashcards have always been a favorite of mine. Such a great visual. You did a great job offering various methods of studying.

ReplyDeleteHello Katie, I love flashcards too & I know they work for students! I love your ideas of studying - great suggestions!
ReplyDeleteI love flashcards or some times even a cheat sheet. By the time the students have completed the assignment they are half way or more done studying the material.

ReplyDeleteAlso for some group studying works well. This was never the case for me as a student. I needed my time to ingrain the information and then I could work with a group. I will say that I had a lot of promise with making information into catching rhymes or songs.
ReplyDeleteGreat suggestions Katie. Flash cards are a great way for students to review. I love the idea of using Quizlet. Quizlet allows you to make the flashcards for the review. If quick recognition of vocabulary or key ideas is important then Quizlet can give you that practice.
ReplyDeleteFlashcards are great but I find that practicing math or chemistry so that students then can apply the information on a test or quiz is great.
ReplyDeleteKatie, These are great suggestions! I especially like the use of flashcards - be it handwritten or online - and concepts. I think it could be helpful to do both of these as you study! Consider how organizing your flashcards into groups, categories, major concepts, etc. could help the ideas resonate even more.
ReplyDeleteGreat tips for any student of any age to remember and ude!
ReplyDeleteQuizlet is a great tool to use! A study group is great for math also. My AP calculus class had a study group and it really helped them understand the steps and how to approach problems.
ReplyDeleteI would add that making flash cards, while reviewing notes is great for studying notes/textbook readings because then you have something tangible that you can rearrange to see if there are relationships and patterns to the information you are studying. It's all about making connections.
ReplyDeleteI love Quizlet! It is a great study tool. My favorite function is the scramble game. This turns it into a competition. Best of all, you are competing against yourself trying to beat your best time!
ReplyDeleteThese are great tips for all students!!! I strongly encourage the use of flashcards in my classroom. I teach a foreign language so it is a great way to quickly go through vocabulary. I like the hand written flashcards but quizlet is also nice. I also use Study Stack. Study groups are also great for students. When students collaborate, they learn so much from each other.
ReplyDeleteI love quizlet and am so glad that you would encourage students to use it to study with. This is a valuable tool and will allow students access to many different styles of questions.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great post! I've always liked flashcards for my classes, especially with vocabulary (in addition to other methods). I like how you broke down what skill you needed to be successful on the test and which strategy works best.
ReplyDeleteGreat post for helping students that really don't know how to study. I would also say about flashcards that it is not only a good idea to make note of the ones you do not know well, but also to note the ones you can answer quickly and correctly. So often students continue to study information that they have mastered instead of focusing on what they are struggling with.
ReplyDeleteThis post is very helpful for students that are seeking new study habits! Using Quizlet to create flashcards is a great resource and one that I use often in my course. It is also important that students are able to figure out the concepts they have mastered and really focus on those skills that need to be improved upon.
ReplyDeleteLearning vocabulary can be very helpful when studying new concepts. Kahoot in addition to quizlet are sites to consider.
ReplyDeletei use quizlet a lot and it is a very effective way to study. i also make flashcards for EVERYTHING. I use color coated note-cards for every category that i will need on the test. that way all my thoughts are organized.

ReplyDeleteI really think that flashcards are a helpful way of learning. I agree how writing them down will help already, and then referring back to them will help even more. I think quizlet is an awesome tool as well.
ReplyDeleteMemorization really helps me because I naturally have a good memory. I also like to take notes and make flashcards. Quizlet is great but, personally, I learn better if I write out my own cards.
ReplyDeleteAll of these methods are useful in my studying process, but the one that works best for me would be flashcards. While Quizlet is very useful when on the go because of the mobile app, I like to make my own because I am writing it which helps me learn better. The section about studying for math because a lot of times, students complain about not being able to understand the test problems, so if you study with a variety of problems then you will know for sure you know the process to solve the problem

ReplyDeleteThank you for the information! Flashcards are usually my best study tool. I make flashcards but most of the time it takes up a lot of my working time. I'll have to give Quizlet a try.
ReplyDeleteThank you, you gave me a good understanding on how to study. Cause my way was so Inefficient and did not help at all.
