Online Learning for the New School Year
By: James B.
Are you just beginning your first online course of the year? Are you worried about not having a teacher in front of you? Don’t be! Learning without a teacher will make you a more independent learner. Becoming an independent learner will help prepare you for college. All you have to do is stay on task and don’t fall behind.
Are you just beginning your first online course of the year? Are you worried about not having a teacher in front of you? Don’t be! Learning without a teacher will make you a more independent learner. Becoming an independent learner will help prepare you for college. All you have to do is stay on task and don’t fall behind.
Online classes take much more self-motivation than traditional classes. You might be worried about how much time you will have to spend working on your assignments at home, but I assure you, if you work diligently at school and avoid playing games, watching videos, etc; you will have much less work to do at home. I have seen other students that have complained about having a heavy work load and hours of homework to do, yet they always played games in class or listened to music, etc. You need to have a schedule for exactly when you are going to do each assignment.
At the beginning of each week, you should decide on how you are going to pace yourself throughout the week, which assignments to do at what times, etc. Some teachers will provide a day by day schedule. Some may only provide a weekly schedule and simply ask you to turn everything in by the end of the week. If your teacher posts weekly schedules, then it is essential that you pace yourself throughout the week. Do NOT wait until the last day or two to complete an entire week’s worth of assignments. Spending an entire night on homework is definitely NOT fun.
Why take online courses? I’m sure the common response is that the given course wasn’t available at that student’s school. While this may be true, the most important thing you gain from taking an online course is independence. When going to college, there will be many times when there will be no help from the teacher or other students. In most online courses, search engines such as Google will become your best friend. There may be questions that you can’t find in the text and you may have to do some research. Learning how to find an answer yourself and researching additional topics will be very useful in college. Online courses in general help to prepare you for the kind of environment you will encounter in college.
Congratulations for taking advantage of NCVPS, the classes they offer, and also for taking on the challenge of online learning. You will acquire many skills from online learning that you could never gain from a traditional class.

Great article James and a good way to start off the year!
ReplyDeletehi i like the blog very much.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you when you said that learning online and independently makes you a better learner. I think it also teaches you to become more responsible and work harder. great article, I really enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteThat was quite a good article. I will definately try to pace myself throughout the year and not procrastinate
ReplyDeleteThis is so true! I know so many kids who mess around and then complain, so far managing the online work hasn't been so bad as long as you keep up and work a little everyday, you have class time take advantage of it! (:
ReplyDeleteI really really think it is a great idea to not procrastinate. That is prolly the main reason students fail. Like you said, students that are busy playin games watchin vids etc. are the ones who are getting behind and end up failing. Im not worried at all. I have sat down and thought about when im going to do it every day and I have just decided to start everyday when I get home and I will stay caught up and maybe even get ahead some :]
ReplyDeleteLearning online really dose make you a better learner. It also prepares you for college also.
ReplyDeleteyes in college you are taking online classes also. But you have too keep up with your work 24/7 .

ReplyDeleteI agree with the whole 'you need to spend your time wisely' thing. I usually put everything off til the last second. aparently that doesnt work when you have a weeks worth of work to do in a day. As i have now learned.
ReplyDeleteI am a procractinator and i feel like i'm starting off slow!but i agree with the video games or listening to music and being 17 i have plenty of distractions but i've made myself a promise STAY FOCUSED!!! Great article

I was so stressed the first couple days of class, just because I was looking at the amount of work needing to be done. But now, a week into it, I see that it's really not that bad. :) Things may take longer than you expect though, but all you have to do is know what's due when.
ReplyDeleteThere is a sense of autonomy and self-respect that comes from online learning and it really does help students prepare for college.
ReplyDeleteStudents gain a sense of how organized they must be as well!
Great article!
keeping a good pace is the only way you can keep up in an online class. Great Article!

ReplyDeletewhen you have a weekly schedule you do need to plan out when to do it but also you need to make sure you ant got no events that can put you behind with the schedule you created for yourself.
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic article. It shows students that there shouldn't be any fear in taking an online class. I'm hoping my online class will help me for the future (college). Thanks again for some great words of wisdom.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading that, especially about the independence factor. I very much love that about this course I am taking, and I feel like I am learning to take full advantage of my time in both getting my work done and having a good time. I'm also very organized and the tips you've suggested are things I'm already learning to do, so this article makes me feel very successful. Thanks. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree your article. Expecially with the part about spending your time wisely. Also, thanks for the encouragement about taking an online course. I thought it would be sort of hard without a teacher in front of you. And i do think it helps you learn independence.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way you do about online classes. You have to be very independent and always stay very organized so you can pace yourself with assignments throughout the week.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips. The things you said are all proving true.
ReplyDeleteThis article is really helpful. Everything he is saying makes sense, but can also be applied to more than just your online class.
ReplyDeleteThanks for writing this article! The things that are talked about are very helpful for me. I will most definitely take these tips into consideration ! And again, Thank You.!
ReplyDeleteI feel like this is what I'll get out of taking an online course! While I am a little bit worried, I know it will only take a small amount of time to adjust to this new form of learning!
ReplyDeleteGreat article and excellent advice!
ReplyDeleteI can agree with this article, speically the part about getting sidetracked.
ReplyDeletevery helpful! thanks a bunch :)
ReplyDeleteI really agree with the article, and I think online classes really help me to be more independent. I had to catch up because I added the class late, but I hope to work hard and use my class time wisely to avoid some of the problems he mentioned.

ReplyDeleteThis is a great article, thanks. You got to the heart of the matter in this blog. Learning isn't just always about the course material you are mastering. It's also about learning how to learn. In this case, online learning, is a relatively new area for students, Principals, DLA's and parents. It's an exciting area and an area that will continue to grow. However, students and parents need to understand what they have signed up for. It's a responibility that cannot be taken lightly. Those students and parents that do find themselves in a place they possibly don't want to be in but cannot get out of. The most important thing is that it offers a whole new area of exciting possibilities for the students that they did not have access to prior to online learning. I would like to ask your permission to post this article on our website. I am the Distance Learning Learning Coordinator for a school district and your article says it very well. Thank you again.
ReplyDeleteI agree the article where it says that learning online and independently makes you a better learner. I think it also teaches you to become more responsible and work harder, also set your mine to what u want to do.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed it...
