Learning on the computer is almost the same as learning in the classroom. You sit down, take notes, and complete quizzes and tests. There are some differences though, like not being able to talk to somebody and get an immediate response. You also have to be more independent, and know the material. Being successful in an online course is in essence, the same way of being successful in a normal classroom.
When you don’t have pronto your ability to talk to your teacher and get an immediate response is reduced. You have to go into your email and send an email to your teacher and wait for a response. Even if your question is a minor one, and you know the answer but wasn’t quite one hundred percent sure; you would still have to wait. With tutors you are able to get responses you need quickly. Talking to a peer tutor is like talking to a classmate in a regular classroom. Peer tutors aren’t exactly like classmates though, we have been in your position before, know the material, and have passed the class. It really helps when you are being assisted by somebody who’s been in your position before and can give you advice, epically if it’s your first time using blackboard.
You have to be independent when you take an online class. Unlike a classroom you don’t have a teacher who’s staring at you making sure you do your work. You’ve got to be more independent if you want the A you deserve. One thing I learned the hard way was to take notes. Even though you might be reading notes, writing them down in a notebook that helps so much. After that you should study in any way that will help you pass. If you need help with some parts, having a tutor helps you so much. If you get a tutor in the beginning of the year and we can understand your strong and weak points so we can help you even better when you get to the harder parts of your course.
Participating in an online class is in some ways like a regular class, but also different. You must be motivated to work and do whatever you need to succeed. You must use the best way to learn the material and pass the quizzes and tests. You’ve got to remember to login and check what the teacher has announced for that day, it’s pretty easy once you get the hang of it!
Happy Learning!!
Wonderful post, Jana. I will be sharing this with all of my SAT Prep students.
ReplyDeleteAwesome, article, Jana. I think all on line students can relate. You are exactly right about students taking notes. I find many don't read announcements or messages much less the instructions and notes. I will make this article available to my students. Thank you for your excellent insight.
ReplyDeleteGreat article! I hope this will encourage my students even more to seek out tutors!
ReplyDeleteIt was an interesting read.
ReplyDeleteBegin in an online class at this point, I can agree with the fact that we do need to ask for help from the Peer Tutors whenever we can.
For example, I needed help for a bit of work that was due that day but the teacher wasn't on at the time. Good thing was there was a tutor on that was able to answer my questions and I got it done that day.
Nice job Jana. All of this is verry true. I might start writing notes in my notebook now.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the help!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great comparison between online and classroom learning. I hadn't noticed many similarities until now. Thanks!
