  1. Thanks for writing this! I would have loved to read something like this before I went into high school. I especially like your section on making friends- that is such an intimidating part of the high school experience and you have great suggestions!

  2. This is great! I hope students read this and take some pointers. These are things that most people out of high school would definitely agree with and wish they knew before high school.

  3. These are good suggestions. I think this information should be available to 8th grade students so they will understand what to look for when they are freshmen.

  4. I think you hit the nail on the head! It's all about finding the right balance between grades/school, extracurriculars, friends, family, and yourself. That can be challenging, but learning when to say no and creating healthy boundaries for yourself is a very important skill to learn.

  6. This is right on point. This should be given to every student with a welcome to HS packet. The balance between social, academic, family and extra curricular is a skill.

  7. Awesome suggestions! Getting involved and taking care of your mental health by sleeping enough, eating right and being connected and involved will help increase scores and have better grades. It is important to think about these things and establish good time management habits at the beginning of high school. Great tips!

  8. I wish I would have had this type of resource when I was younger. This piece is very informative and done in a manner that middle schoolers can understand. Including a variety of ways to be prepared is also a highlight. The key with the workload given in high school is balance, and I believe that you provided that balance within this piece!

  10. I appreciate the information presented in this blog. I wish this would have been presented to me as a freshman in high school and even when I began my graduate course work online in college. This is a very informative piece and I like how it was referenced to movies the students would be familiar with so they can relate and that is a great hook to the blog.

  12. This is great advice for rising 9th graders! Grades certainly are important and you need to be aware of that right off the bat, but I like that you mention that they shouldn't be at the sacrifice of a healthy sleep schedule or your hobbies. This can really help 8th graders that are nervous entering high school.

  13. This advice is perfect for incoming and current freshmen! If more students knew early on how important it was to be well-rounded during their high school journey I think they would not only find more college opportunities, but also be more successful throughout their college career. Life is all about healthy balance!

  14. Really like the advice about trying out different clubs and electives to find out what you're interested in. I also appreciate how you mentioned that while grades are important, they shouldn't come at the expense of sleep and a social life.

  15. I like how you stated that grades are important but you still need to have a healthy sleep schedule and hobbies. I think it is easy for students to put too much emphasis on grades and then forget to go to bed!

  16. This is all very good information and information that I feel like every student should have at their fingertips. Whether it is about school work or friendships, advice is always needed during your adolescent years because of just "life."

  18. I think this post is crucial for every middle schooler to read prior to high school admittance. Also great for high school freshmen. I can still to this day remember my first day of high school where I bought this ridiculous outfit (very "Jenny from the Block" styled) and did my hair in a way that was not me at all... all because I thought high school was so different from what I experienced in middle school and that it was very much like what I saw on TV... it was not. It most certainly is a place to try new things like clubs, make new friends, and to be quite honest.. be weird!! I think a "Things I Knew before College" would be a great follow up post to help college bound students... because that's a doozy too!

  24. This is such a great idea and a wonderful way to encourage younger students to focus on what is important as they move through high school! I think it is great that you are using your own experience to selflessly help guide the next group of students and lead them to success. I particularly like the advice about trying out new activities and interests. Often, students are intimidated in the beginning of high school and this stops them from doing something that looks interesting to them. This could prevent them from finding their passion and even an activity that could lead them to their future career. By doing this, you may change the path of a student’s life!
